Seven Stars To Reopen As Welsh Centre This Month
A landmark Wrexham pub is set to re-
Saith Seren (Welsh for Seven Stars) is holding a party weekend on the 27th and 28th January to celebrate the launch.
Back in September Wrexham.com received a tour of the historic listed building.
The pub situated on Chester Street will offer Welsh food, real ale and language classes as well as meeting places upstairs.
Fittingly Y Saith Seren will open on Friday January 27 which is Santes Dwynwen (the Welsh patron saint of lovers) Night with Gwibdaith Hen Frân, a Welsh music act from Blaenau Ffestiniog providing the entertainment.
Tickets are selling well and are available from Siop y Siswrn in the People’s Market and Saith Seren itself.
The official opening will then be carried out by two local legends at midday on Saturday the 28th.
Spencer Harris, former Welsh learner of the year and a key player in Wrexham Supporters’ Trust, from Brynteg, and former Wrexham FC player and manager Dixie McNeil will both officially open the centre.
Saith Seren chair Marc Jones said: “Both Spencer and Dixie in their different ways are local heroes and, as well as promoting the Welsh language and culture in all aspects of Welsh life, Saith Seren is also about celebrating local achievement and pride in Wrecsam. Both Dixie and Spencer have done their bit in making our town somewhere to be proud of.
“That’s why we’re also delighted to have reached agreement to sell Wrexham Lager in the bar. The new lager brewery has been very supportive of our venture, has successfully taken on the big lager companies and that’s also something to celebrate.”
On Saturday night another live band, the Wee Bag Band, from Denbigh will be playing in the bar. They described as a Pogues-
The centre will also be serving food from its newly installed kitchen and will, in the coming months, be able to rent refurbished offices and hire out meeting rooms in the converted upstairs part of the building.
The intention is to provide a focus for Welsh speakers, learners and supporters of the language and culture in the centre, which is designed to be a permanent legacy of last year’s National Eisteddfod in Wrexham.
The centre is run by a cooperative that has succeeded in attracting members from across Wales and as far afield as San Fransisco. It has appointed Amanda Hughes, from Brymbo, to be the centre’s full-
Marc Jones, who is also a local councillor, said: “The centre will provide a warm bilingual welcome for all. We intend to hold all sorts of events at Saith Seren, with regular live music by Welsh-
“Six months ago, when the Eisteddfod finished, we made our first public appeal for people to join our cooperative. I don’t think anyone believed then that we would be opening so soon but here we are. I hope everyone comes to visit Saith Seren, which is one of Wrecsam’s landmark buildings, to join in the hwyl and see what we have on offer – whether it’s for a meal, an afternoon coffee or a pint.”

Raffle boost for Wrecsam's Welsh Centre
A Christmas raffle has boosted funds for Wrecsam's new Welsh Centre.
The Welsh Centre, which will be based at the town's Seven Stars pub in Chester Street, has gained support from many local food and drink suppliers and the draw for the raffle took place in the Butcher's Market.
...
Amanda Hughes, who was recently appointed as the centre's manager, said: "Local food and drink suppliers are central to the idea of the Saith Seren (Seven Stars in Welsh). We'll be getting food for our kitchen from local suppliers like butcher Rob Platt, who helped us draw the raffle. We're busy preparing for our opening in the New Year and the raffle will help us reach our financial targets. We've already had more than 80 people invest in the cooperative that will run the Saith Seren.
"Work on installing the kitchen starts early in January and we're interviewing for staff so that everything is in place when we have our grand opening."
Councillor Marc Jones, who chairs the Canolfan Gymraeg Wrecsam cooperative, said: "The hampers and other prizes were donated by board members and we're also very grateful to local food and drink suppliers, such as Just Tea and Coffee, for their support in developing this idea. There's been a great deal of interest in the project and a lot of work has been going on behind the scenes to finalise building work and renovations. Everything is now coming together for a grand opening in the New Year and we will keep everyone updated on our website, www.saithseren.com.
"Anyone wishing to invest in the cooperative can do so through the website or by e-

INVESTORS INVITED TO VIEW WELSH CENTRE PROJECT
Potential investors are being invited to attend an open day to help re-
The community cooperative planning to re-
Councillor Marc Jones, who chairs the venture, said: "We held a series of open meetings last month and had a very positive response from people who came. Many were pleasantly surprised to see the downstairs area in such good condition, as it had recently been refurbished before it closed suddenly last year. I think that helped many to decide that this was an investment they were ready to make and become members of the cooperative.
"There are minor works to be done to make sure it's in working order but it doesn't take a leap of the imagination to see that we can be ready to open the downstairs with minimal work. We're already talking to suppliers and there has been a lot of interest in renting the offices and meeting rooms we have planned for the upstairs area.
"The main challenge is to raise enough money to fit out the kitchen, buy stock, employ a manager and staff and to have enough working capital to see us over the first few months. That's why we're holding another open session to allow investors in to the building on Saturday.
The centre will trade under the Welsh-
Potential investors can join for as little as £100 and can find out more about the scheme on www.saithseren.com. The cooperative has also come to an arrangement with the local credit union on King Street to enable investors to take out a loan for the £100 and pay it back monthly.
Cllr Jones said: "Because Wrexham are playing at home on Saturday, a few people from outside the area have been in touch to say they're coming along before going to the game. The interest in this venture from outside the immediate area has been heartening -
"More importantly, we've had a lot of support from people in Wrexham. The enthusiasm for the idea from Welsh speakers, learners and parents who are sending their children to Welsh-

Disused Wrexham pub could become centre for Welsh activities
by Eryl Crump, DPW West
Aug 4 2011
A DISUSED pub in the centre of Wrexham could help promote the development of the Welsh language in the area.
A £200,000 appeal will be launched in the town today to raise the money to buy the Seven Stars pub in Chester Street.
The pub, a large brick built building near the Guildhall has been empty for the past six months and is for sale.
Wrexham councillor Marc Jones said: “We want 100 people to invest £1,000 and 1,000 people to invest £100 in order to raise the money.
“Once we’ve been able to buy the building we’ll renovate it and open it as a cafe and bar, offices and meeting rooms and create a truly Welsh atmosphere.
“There is a lot of interest in the project and I am hopeful that it will be one of the legacies from the National Eisteddfod which is being held in town.
“About 12,000 people speak Welsh in the area but there are thousands more who are very supportive of the language and one of the purposes of the building would be to hold Welsh language classes.
“It would also give people of all ages somewhere to meet and speak Welsh in a relaxed and social atmosphere.”
Mr Jones added more than £24,000 has already been raised.
Aled Roberts, chairman of the local Eisteddfod committee and former Wrexham Council leader has said one of the challenges facing the area is providing opportunities for youngsters educated in Welsh medium schools to speak Welsh outside the classroom.

“What we are looking to do is to either buy or lease the Seven Stars, which is currently not being used as a pub. It is an excellent building in good condition.
“Among our plans we are aiming to establish a cafe bar which would put the focus on local produce – food and drink.
“There could be a wide range of activities and attractions such as live entertainment and drama. There are also offices and meeting rooms available.”
